Dorothy, Change Agent
President of McDonald’s Women’s Operators Network | Owner operator since 1998 | 16 Phoenix locations
“I’m really committed to the voices of women in our system.”
As part of McDonald’s owner-operator leadership, Dorothy spends much of her day talking and listening, to uncover issues and how she can advocate for her employees, company and fellow owner operators to make the system better. She is committed to maintaining a respectful place—a place where you’re proud to work or refer someone for a job. Where it’s safe for people to re-enter the workforce. And where people can learn and grow. Dorothy emphasizes how important access to education has been to her career, and notes the opportunity it now affords her as an employer to help the people she leads. In fact, when asked for examples of how McDonald’s has helped people to grow, Dorothy says she has hundreds.
Danny, Extended family member
Crew member for more than 10 years | Phoenix
“This is my extended family. I love them. And they love me.”
After spending a year of retirement “sitting around the house,” Danny decided he had to get out and do something. He applied online for a job at McDonald’s, interviewed, and assumed his role at the front counter. He’s been here ever since. He and his customers know each other by name. He knows their orders by heart and looks forward to seeing them every day. And they look forward to seeing him. In fact, one customer—who calls Danny “papa”—stops in specifically to see him and bring him homemade banana bread. Knowing that his customers think and ask about him makes Danny feel good. Makes him proud.
Denise, Broadway musical fan
Restaurant manager for more than 5 years | New York City
“I’ve become this woman—proud and confident—who wasn’t there before.”
Denise loves to interact with customers, especially in Times Square. When she spots someone with a theater T-shirt or Playbill in hand, she just has to ask about the amazing show. For Denise the most rewarding part of what she does is helping her employees more. Anything and everything she has wanted in life, Denise says, is to help people. She wants to be the person her team members can come to for anything. As a manager she feels like she can do and help a lot more. She appreciates the flexibility she has to earn a living while attending grad school. Most of all she is grateful of how McDonald’s has enabled her to grow personally and professionally.
Sunilda, International family member
Restaurant manager | McDonald’s employee for more than 10 years | New York City
“You get to know people from all over the world.”
Working with and learning from people is the best part of working at McDonald’s, says Sunilda. When she first started at McDonald’s, she said English was a barrier … and that the great team members and managers around her really helped out and made her feel comfortable. She appreciates the opportunities that McDonald’s offers—to try something different. To learn English as a second language or earn a high school diploma. To care for family and have a good life outside of work. And to get to know people from Africa to Australia to Europe … to right around the corner.
Mark, Biomedical and neuroscience student and one-day cardiothoracic surgeon
Shift manager | Crew member since 15 years of age | Illinois
“I chose McDonald’s because I heard of how helpful it is for education opportunities.”
When Mark set out to earn money for college, he chose McDonald’s because of the opportunities—the support for his education both in terms of time and money. Our flexible schedules and tuition assistance program are a huge help as he pursues his premed and medical-school education. He acknowledges that McDonald’s embraces its place as an employee’s first step to creating a career for themselves—be it in medicine or law, hospitality or otherwise. He’s already had the opportunity to grow and be promoted, and to hone the interpersonal skills that you can't get from a textbook, which will be instrumental in his desired career as a surgeon.
